Hon. Ali Abu Albaba Intervenes in Katsina DJ-Hisbah Dispute
“Hon. Ali Abu Albaba, met with the DJ group to discuss their concerns about the Katsina State Hisbah Board. This meeting took place on May 16, 2024, at the Katsina Hotel conference room.
Recall that last Ramadan, the Katsina State Hisbah Board issued a statement banning gatherings, including DJ events, which affected some DJ professionals. Today, Hon. Ali Abu Albaba met with the DJ group to hear their side of the story. He emphasized that anyone with a legitimate complaint should be heard and addressed.
The DJ group, led by Hassan Master (also known as DJ Master), expressed their grievances, particularly about the Hisbah Board’s treatment of them. They claimed that the Board often confiscates their equipment and harasses them.
Ibrahim Ibrahim, CEO of Trend, stated that the Hisbah Board should be fair and just in their dealings with the DJ community. He urged the Board to investigate and take appropriate action instead of making arbitrary decisions.
MC Masanzie, a DJ, criticized the Hisbah Board’s approach, saying that if they have issues with DJs, they should address them directly instead of generalizing and stereotyping. He also mentioned that the Board should work with the DJ community to find solutions.
Hon. Ali Abu Albaba concluded by saying that the Hisbah Board needs to be fair and just in their dealings with the public. He emphasized that there is no law that gives the Hisbah Board the power to carry arms and that they should work with the DJ community to find a mutually beneficial solution.”
Note: Hisbah Board is a religious police force in some Nigerian states, including Katsina, that enforces Sharia law and moral codes. DJ refers to disk jockeys or music players.
